The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has unveiled musician Mukiibi Sadat, popularly known as Kalifa Aganaga, as its official candidate for the Kawempe North by-election.

Speaking at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, FDC president Patrick Amuriat acknowledged initial doubts about fielding a candidate but said the party ultimately settled on Aganaga.

“We have spoken to our brother Aganaga, and we have learned that beneath those deadlocks, there is a competent leader, a great human,” Amuriat said.

He lightheartedly added that he once considered growing dreadlocks in his youth, drawing laughter from the audience.

Robert Centenary, the party’s deputy president for Western Uganda, defended the choice, citing the late Muhammad Segirinya’s political journey.

“The few hours I spent with Mukiibi Sadat impressed me—his conduct, his academic credentials. Sometimes we judge people at face value. I believe he is an inspiration to young people,” Centenary said, arguing that FDC has a track record of nurturing leaders.

Bad Character Records CEO Aganaga, who was previously denied a National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket for Rubaga South in 2021 in favour of current MP Aloysius Mukasa, has been outspoken about his willingness to engage in politics with anyone willing to support him.

The FDC also confirmed Sharif Ssebunya as its candidate for the vacant Kazo-Angola Ward councillor seat.
