At least 65 suspects believed to be members of a criminal gang terrorizing residents in Kampala and Wakiso are in custody following a coordinated security operation by the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in Kira Division last week.
Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma confirmed the report during the weekly press briefing at Police Headquarters Naguru on Monday, February 10, 2024.
“A joint army and police operation on February 6th and 7th, 2025, in areas of Kyaliwajjala B (Nabwojjo), Kyaliwajjala A (Kyaliwajjala market), Bweyogerere (Kasubi), Kireka railways, Naalya, and Kira tax park, led to the arrest of 65 suspects,” ACP Kituuma stated.
The operations aimed to crack down on suspected criminals involved in robberies, burglaries, and related cases, targeting known hideouts and gathering places,” he added.
During the security sweep, Kituuma said, several suspects were found in possession of marijuana, further linking them to illegal activities.
Although police did not reveal the identities of the arrested individuals, investigations are ongoing to establish their involvement in the reported crimes
Kituuma emphasized that these operations are part of broader efforts to curb crime in urban areas and restore public safety.
“We are committed to ensuring that our communities remain safe from criminal elements,” he said, urging residents in the affected areas to cooperate with law enforcement by providing any relevant information that may aid further investigations.
The latest Kira operation follows a series of similar crackdowns in the Kampala Metropolitan Area aimed at dismantling criminal networks involved in theft, drug trafficking, and organized crime.
