Kamuli Chief Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Kevina Nabirye, a mother of four, to 20 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to attempted murder for severing her husband’s genitals.

On the night of February 18, 2025, at around 11pm, Nabirye attacked her husband, Mathias Bwamiki, at their marital home in Buguwa village, Kamuli District.

She reportedly accused him of infidelity and poor performance in bed before committing the gruesome act.

In his judgment on Wednesday, February 26, Chief Magistrate Paul Owino emphasized the severity of the crime and the permanent harm inflicted on the victim.

While Nabirye’s guilty plea and remorse were taken into account, the magistrate upheld the 20-year sentence, acknowledging the irreversible consequences for the victim.

The sentencing has sparked mixed reactions among Kamuli residents and online communities.

Some argue that the punishment is too lenient given the lifelong consequences for Bwamiki, while others feel it is too harsh, considering the domestic issues that allegedly led to the attack.

There is ongoing debate on social media, with some suggesting that Nabirye should have received a life sentence due to the severity of the injury caused.

Bwamiki is currently recovering at Kamuli General Hospital, where medical experts have stated that he may never regain conjugal rights, as his penis was completely severed in the attack.

Legal experts note that while the sentence aligns with Ugandan penal codes, some believe the brutality of the act warranted a longer term.
