The police in Kaliro District have arrested Sergeant Charles Kyakwise, an officer attached to Kaliro Police Station, to aid investigations into the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old student in Kyani, Bumanya Sub-County.

The deceased, identified as Mudago Sogo, was a student at Kaliro Vocational Secondary School in the Busoga subregion district.

According to initial findings, it is alleged that on Saturday, March 8, 2025, a resident of Kananzoki village, Mutebi Godfrey, reported a case of cattle theft, alleging that three bulls had been stolen by unknown individuals.

In response, police officers deployed a sniffer dog at the scene, which led investigators to Zigondo Bosco Pande, a known habitual offender.

As officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, an irate mob gathered, turning aggressive and pelting stones at the police. To protect the suspect and de-escalate the situation, the officers took refuge indoors.

However, as the mob grew more violent, Sgt. Kyakwise Charles discharged his firearm, fatally wounding Mudago Sogo.

The injured student was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on the way. His body was later transferred to Bumanya Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Busoga North Police Spokesperson, Mr. Kasadha Michael, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the suspect, Sgt. Kyakwise Charles, is under detention at Kaliro Central Police Station (CPS) as inquiries continue.
