Rebecca Cheptegei, Uganda’s top athlete who participated in the just concluded Paris Olympics 2024, is fighting for her life.
She suffered a life-threatening attack after a jilted boyfriend doused her in petrol and set her ablaze, in Trans Nzoia County, in the neighbouring Kenya.
Cheptegei is in critical condition after sustaining 75% burns and is receiving treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.
Cheptegei, who made her marathon debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was attacked by her boyfriend, identified as Dickson Ndiema Marangach, who doused her with a flammable substance before setting her ablaze on Monday.
Cheptegei ran in the women’s marathon at last alongside teammates Stella Chesang and Mercyline Chelangat, finishing in 48th place.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom confirmed the incident. He said that they are currently conducting a probe into the matter.
Her offensive partner, Ndiema, also sustained serious burns and is at the same hospital.
Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has also confirmed the incident and said they are working with their Kenyan counterparts.
Benjamin Njia, the UAF Vice President Technical, said it was “sad to learn of this development, and we are doing everything within our means to give Cheptegei the best support she needs.”
