Outspoken social media critic Frank Gashumba is not about to join nemesis Robert Kyagulanyi’s (Bobi Wine’s) pity party soon.
Moments after word of Bobi Wine’s shooting filtered on social media, with grainy footage being shared, Gashumba took to his official X account to punch holes into the narrative that Bobi Wine had survived an assassination attempt.
Our president, Bobi Wine, has been shot in the leg by police in Bulindo!” a post on Mr. Kyagulanyi’s official X account, signed off by ‘Admin’, said.
The account later claimed that Mr. Kyagulanyi was targeted for assassination.
Some social media users rushed to poke holes in the NUP account of the incident.
Frank Gashumba was among the doubting Thomases, implying the nature of the injury was exaggerated.
He posted “China Town Bullet” on his X account, along with a picture of what appears to be a minor injury on Bobi Wine’s leg.
China Town was in reference to the claims that Bobi Wine had been shot with a fake bullet.
Police promised a full-scale investigation of the incident in a statement. They revealed that chances are that Bobi Wine was hit by fragments from an exploding teargas canister and not a bullet as was alleged.
Earlier, the police spokesman, Kituuma Rusoke, said the opposition leader could have injured himself while trying to get into his vehicle.
“Police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas Hon. Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot,” said the police spokesman, Kituuma Rusoke.
