Minister died on arrival, Hospital explains

Mengo Hospital has explained the circumstances surrounding the death of Uganda’s defence state minister Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, 50, who died on Saturday morning.

In a statement on posted on X, Mengo Hospital said the state minister was confirmed dead on arrival at their emergency department

“Mengo Hospital extends its deepest condolences to the family of Nyirabashitsi, Woman MP Kisoro and State Minister of Defense, who was confirmed dead on arrival at our emergency department. We also send our sympathies to the Parliament of Uganda,” the hospital said.

Defence spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye confirmed that the minister died Saturday morning after she was rushed to Mengo Hospital.

“It is sad. She passed away at Mengo Hospital where she had been taken this morning. She was in office on Friday and she was scheduled to travel to South Korea this afternoon. Her passing on is sudden,” said Kulayigye.

A member of her family said the former youth state minister was battling heart-related complications and that the Minister collapsed at her home in Nsanji in Wakiso district before family members and her guards rushed her to hospital.

Nyirabashitsi was the daughter of former foreign affairs state minister Philemon Mateke.

Nyirabashitsi went to Seseme Integrated School and Mary Hill High School where she completed her secondary education.

She enrolled in Bugema University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in business administration.
