Lawyer Ssemakadde elected Uganda Law Society President

City lawyer Isaac Kimaze Ssemakadde who describes himself as an anti-clockwise thinker who cannot obey standing orders, has been elected the Uganda Law Society (ULS) president.
 
Ssemakadde defeated the outgoing ULS secretary general Isaac Atukunda in the heavily contested polls.
 
Ssemakadde was  declared winner by the ULS election committee headed by Moses Mwase. Ssemakadde polled 2,101 votes against 890 votes garnered by Atukunda. Ssemakadde replaces Bernand Oundo.
 
Following his declaration, Ssemakadde thanked the members for voting for him.
 
“I am committed to serving you with integrity and transparency. Together, we will continue to advance the values that define us, upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and ensuring that our society remains inclusive and progressive,” Ssemakadde said.
 
Anthony Asiimwe has also been elected the ULS vice president after defeating Fatuma Omar with a slight margin of about 50 votes.
 
Philip Munabi has also been elected the ULS secretary general, replacing Atukunda.
 
Mwase thanked the National Electoral Commission for the support which it has afforded the ULS election committee which has enabled them to have a free and fair electoral process.
 
Mwase said this year’s election is historic because of the huge voter turnout.
 
Uganda Law Society is majorly charged with ensuring professionalism among lawyers in Uganda.

While at Law Development Centre (LDC), Ssemakadde co-founded Legal Brains Trust.
 
He is a top public interest and human rights lawyer. Ssemakadde worked at AF Mpanga (Bowmans) before setting up Centre for Legal Aid through which he practices Public Interest Litigation. Ends
