Kayunga District has been a focal point of outreach for Dogslove Care Uganda throughout this year. Under the leadership of its founder, Bagenda Benard, the organization has dedicated itself to improving the lives of stray and vulnerable dogs in the region, and the journey so far has been one of profound impact and growth.
Reflecting on the motivation behind this initiative, Bagenda shares:
“My journey with Dogslove Care Uganda in Kayunga started through a dear friend, John Odong. John had witnessed the harsh conditions that dogs in this community were enduring and reached out to me earlier this year. In February, I made my first visit to Kayunga and was deeply moved by what I saw. Stray dogs were giving birth to puppies under brick caves, lacking even the most basic shelter and care. It was a heartbreaking sight, but it also ignited a determination within me to make a difference.”
That initial visit laid the foundation for a year of consistent efforts in the district. From distributing food and medicines to creating awareness about animal welfare, Dogslove Care Uganda has worked tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of dogs in Kayunga. Bagenda recalls those who joined him in this mission:
“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone out there who has been and stood with me at the very beginning. Their support was instrumental in setting the wheels in motion for what has become an ongoing journey of compassion and service. Together, we’ve faced the challenges of this work head-on, and we remain committed to scaling our impact in the years to come.”
As the year comes to a close, Bagenda and his team are planning an end-of-year outreach program, focusing on furthering their mission of love and care for animals. Looking ahead, they have set their sights on an ambitious goal for 2025: constructing a dedicated shelter in Kayunga to provide a safe haven for the district’s stray dogs.
Bagenda concludes with a heartfelt appeal:
