European Union honours UHRC boss Wangadya

The Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), Hon. Mariam Wangadya, has received a prestigious certificate of appreciation from the European Union in Uganda, in recognition of her service and unwavering dedication to defending human rights for all Ugandans.

The certificate was formally presented to Hon. Wangadya by H.E. Jan Sadek, Head of the European Union Delegation, during a high-level reception held at the residence of the Swedish Ambassador in Kampala on the evening of Thursday, May 15, 2025.

The award recognizes Hon. Wangadya’s vital role in advancing the Commission’s mandate, strengthening institutional accountability, and raising public awareness around key human rights concerns including freedom of expression, equality, and access to justice.

remarks upon receiving the award, Hon. Wangadya stated: “I want to appreciate the EU for this huge honour. I pay tribute to all Members of the Commission and staff of the UHRC for the work we do together, and all stakeholders for their continued support.”

She added; “This recognition will encourage and strengthen us in our pursuit of freedom, equality and dignity for all people.”

Hon. Wangadya’s leadership at UHRC has been marked by efforts to improve institutional responsiveness, deepen public engagement, and push back against systemic human rights violations.

Her recognition by the EU underscores growing international acknowledgement of Uganda’s human rights defenders working within challenging political and legal contexts.

The event was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, civil society actors, human rights advocates, and representatives from government, who commended the Commission’s renewed energy in holding duty bearers accountable and amplifying the voices of vulnerable communities
