The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, has today officially launched the construction of 1,200 housing apartments for police officers at the Naguru barracks in Kampala, marking a major step forward in efforts to improve the welfare of the Uganda Police Force.

The ambitious project, set to be completed within 12 months, will provide modern, decent accommodation for police officers and their families—an effort the police leadership says is long overdue.

Speaking during the launch ceremony, IGP Byakagaba underscored the importance of delivering the project on time and to standard. He urged the construction team to work diligently and efficiently to meet the set timeline.

“This initiative is a significant step towards improving the welfare of police officers and their families,” said Byakagaba.

Together with the police’s top leadership, we are focused on enhancing the overall well-being of the police force, and this project is one of those testaments to that commitment.”

The housing project is being executed by the Police Construction Unit under the Directorate of Logistics and Engineering, with a specialized team of engineers assigned to oversee the construction process.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Dr. Namutebi Hadijjah, Director of Welfare Production and Sports, also addressed attendees, highlighting the broader significance of the development.

“The journey to this day has been shaped by collective effort, vision, and unrelenting dedication to improving the lives of those who serve our country with honor and sacrifice,” she said.

Adequate housing is not a privilege—it is a right and a cornerstone of effective service delivery.”

AIGP James Apora, who is overseeing the project, assured the public and police force of its timely completion.

He emphasized the commitment of the engineering team to ensure the apartments are built to the highest standards.
