The leader of the National Unity Platform Party (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi, has urged party members, especially his foot soldiers, to consistently demonstrate a strong sense of discipline in order to prevent any provocation of security forces.

Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, emphasised that this approach is essential for preserving both their safety, individual reputations, and those of the party, while also minimising opportunities for security personnel who may seek to portray them as indisciplined.

“I want to thank the foot soldiers that move with us for exhibiting the highest degree of discipline. They were extremely disciplined and self-restrained even where there would be justification for retaliation to defend themselves,” he noted.

He was addressing journalists. On Friday at his residence in Magere, Wakiso district, regarding the incidents that occurred on September 3, 2024, during which he reportedly sustained injuries from a teargas canister amid a confrontation with the police.

“It is our discipline that is standing in the way of those who want to take us out of the way. I salute and encourage you, to continue being disciplined because that exposes them and fails their attempts on us,” he added.

In recounting the events that occurred on that day, singer-turned-politician Kyagulanyi asserted that he was struck by a teargas canister, countering police assertions that he had simply tripped.

The incident took place on September 3, 2024, as Kyagulanyi was returning from visiting their lawyer in Bulindo, located in the Kiira Division of Wakiso district.

He observed that the event proceeded smoothly, lasting approximately two hours.

However, he said things took a turn for the worse around 5:00 PM as they were leaving the area, spotting police rushing towards them just a short distance from their lawyer’s residence.

“Having moved a few meters, we met police officers charging towards us, throwing canisters and beating those that could not run fast enough,” he added.

He claimed that the police unjustly targeted the innocent supporters, even though the atmosphere was completely peaceful.

Kyagulanyi noted that his driver noticed their approach and, aware of their typical conduct, rushed to raise the car windows.

However, since the car’s roof remained open, one of the officers lurched and pepper sprayed them, compelling them to exit the car. It was then that a tear gas was launched towards them.
