No beef: Bobi Wine, Mpuuga share seat at Kabaka’s birthday mass

The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, and Nyendo-Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga Sunday shared a seat during the Kabaka’s birthday thanksgiving mass at Rubaga Cathedral, a moment that caught the attention of many before a video of the incident went viral on social media.

The two political figures, whose relationship has been strained over the past years, appeared side by side, marking a rare public appearance together since their fallout.

The mass, held in honor of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II’s birthday, was attended by various dignitaries and faithful.

The rift between Kyagulanyi and Mpuuga became public in 2024 when Bobi Wine suspended Mpuuga from his role as NUP Deputy President for Central Region, citing allegations of corruption and abuse of office related to a UGX 500 million “service award” Mpuuga received during his tenure as Leader of Opposition in Parliament. Mpuuga denied the allegations and maintained his commitment to the party.

Despite the tensions, Sunday’s event at Rubaga Cathedral saw the two leaders seated together, engaging in brief conversations and participating in the mass.

While it’s unclear if this signals a reconciliation, the gesture did not go unnoticed by attendees and political observers.

The Kabaka’s birthday celebrations are significant events in Buganda’s cultural calendar, often bringing together leaders from various political backgrounds. The shared seating of Kyagulanyi and Mpuuga at such a high-profile event may hint at efforts to bridge divides within the opposition ahead of the 2026 general elections.
