Two Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers and two civilians have been arrested on suspicion of carrying out a series of night robberies in Kasangati town council, Wakiso district.
The suspects include Pte Moses Mutebi, attached to the 73 Battalion under the 5th Division, and another soldier identified as Pte Mulumba, who is attached to Makindye barracks. The civilians are Emmanuel Muyingo, a resident of Busiika, and Ezekiel Wandera, a resident of Bamba Cell, Kasangati town council.
Their arrest follows an intelligence-led operation conducted in the Kiteezi Cell area by a joint security team led by ASP Charles Twinemukama, with support from the UPDF under the command of Maj. Lubwama.
According to security sources, the operation was initiated after receiving information about a civilian frequently spotted wearing a UPDF uniform at night and moving around in a black Subaru vehicle with registration number UBK 813A
The operation resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of the same vehicle. Recovered exhibits include one UPDF jacket, four women’s dresses, two pairs of women’s shoes, one pair of children’s shoes, and other undisclosed items.
Security sources allege that the suspects were seen wearing army uniforms during their night movements, mainly in the areas of Kiteezi, Busiika, Buwambo, Matugga, Makindye, and other parts of Kampala.
Mulumba, suspected to have played a key role in facilitating the robberies, has been handed over to the UPDF and received by RA 218243 CPL Herbert Twinobusingye of Kasangati Army Barracks. The impounded vehicle is currently being held at Kiteezi police station. Police have preferred charges related to the unlawful possession of government stores against the civilian suspects.
