Vice President Jessica Alupo has officially launched the sh2.2 trillion road project dubbed ‘Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GMKA-UDP)’.
She launched the project at Kira Municipal grounds in Wakiso district on Tuesday.
“The Greater Kampala Metropolitan Project will contribute to addressing the challenges faced in the metropolitan area. These include flooding, traffic congestion, non-signalled junctions, and poor road infrastructure, among others,” Alupo said.
The project will see 140 km of roads constructed in the first two years, starting January 2025.
“Parliament and Cabinet approved this project with the objective of delivering coordinated infrastructure and services to make the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area the engine of transformation and driver of Uganda’s economy,” the Vice President stated.
She also said they now “visibly witness that this central region is highly prone and vulnerable to various hazards that hinder economic growth due to challenges of floods, traffic congestion, fire outbreaks, environmental degradation, and air pollution.”.
The entire road works in Kampala, Mukono, Wakiso, and Mpigi districts will take five years through a loan from the World Bank and Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
Kampala minister Minsa Kabanda recently said that Kampala will get 21.1km, Nansana municipality 12.81km (Wakiso), Makindye Sabagabo (Wakiso) 10.1km, while Wakiso district and Entebbe municipalities will get 29.4km and 3.5km, respectively.
“The ministry has advertised road works in six entities, and works are expected to commence in January 2025,” she said in a statement presented during a media briefing at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala on September 5, 2024.
